Movement & Boundary

The diagram is shown the relation between human and the object by the movement before you use and when you use it. As you can see there are a lots of activities that happen in the same times at "bed" and "working desk" which I always spent the most time on it. On the right side I use 0.5 m* 0.5 m grid to show the area of boundary and the movement of the body and object.

This diagram is shown the sequence of time and my activities which is base on my summer routine. As you can see the document is shown that I always stay in my bedroom and spent more than 9 hours a days on my bed.

Body Based Configuration

This overall daily documentation is to show the clusters of activities happening in a particular area scattered around the house.
Displaying a separated layers between the dynamic of motions and configuration of objects, which would suggest a different interpretation to the existing activity and re-create a whole new set of possibilities.
Classification of movement types to categorize and find similarity on each activity that would occupy a space and how the body part would interact with the object.

The extraction of every possible movement from a proportional scaled model, to analyze the limits of the body within the comfort zone and to explore the possibility of hybridizing multiple activities into one through similarity of the body position.

Movement Visualisation - Dispersed and Recombined

The diagram above is a result of daily routine analysis which focusing on the body movements and gestures toward the daily used objects. The set of body movements are arranged in circular motion according to the time of use. The longer of interaction period is addressed by the more of gestures in the set and the frequency is represented by the white bar next to each object.

The study is not merely the volumetric posture of human body. In order to understand more about relationship between one and surrounding items, few more factors are also being analysed.
The result has shown that some other element such as location of electrical outlet, strength of wifi signal and amount of sunlight emitting on the object surface are also effecting the way that body and object interact.

After study all of the components, the above diagram has been created for further development. First part of the table above is the illustration of volumetric body movement created by overlaying possible gestures contact with one object. The digram clearly shows the occupied space that human body took up. The similarity in gestures and movement together with the effect of surrounded factor (electricity, wifi, sunlight), the lower table portrays the possibility of new type of space that combine those similarities into groups. Undoubtedly, infinite combination can be shaped by individual preferences, result as a endless ideas for new type of space.

Body Gesture and Duration of Interaction

The diagram shows human body gesture and duration of interaction between human body and the things. I choose to exclude architectural structure and other things that I do not interact; in order to see the volume of space that necessary things is using. And how the orientations of things affect the position where I choose to stay in that space.

The things that have direct interaction with my body are extrude our in another axis. Human figure is showing the body movement and how it interacts with the things. The darkness is representing the duration in that post; the darker colour means the longer I stay in that post.

From the diagram, the things that I interact for a long period of time are not only because its providing body comfort and mental entertainment, but also it is in a controlled environment; in terms of brightness and temperature.  Even thought something does not have interaction with human body, but it is still necessary thing that create a comfortable condition for people to dwell.

Activity Abstraction - Bobject

The drawing below shows how step by step, my activities associating with the object became less and less abstract.

The drawing shows the room as a space that I am living in at the moment. The colour then shows the time in which my body interact with the space. The changes in the colour tone indicate the time spending on each event, and the density of the colour tells how many time I pay the visit to the object.
Stepping away from the centre image which is the drawing's origin, the process of understanding the space where the objects are occupying take place. As the processes go on, we can now see that objects are now deceiving into the position where only necessities are left.

In conclusion to the above drawing the result of the abstraction is shown below.

From this drawing, we can now see the result where objects can now be abstract into such a minimum size. But "Is that really the actual size of the thing we are using?"
The answer is no, A TV will not be a TV for me if I don't look at them, and the fridge cannot exist without someone opening it. So The silver lining now lies between the object and the human body.

Each existing object on the above image are the object that came across the line of an 'object'. It became part of our body as we have a direct relation to the object. In this case one cannot operate without one another, and thus also requires a special space to connect them together.

Gestures within Spaces and Object Necessity

The diagram shows activities in time slice approach. Every single hour has been recorded to show how frequently of each room being used, or each surface being contacted. Analysis deeper on the actual movement of the body the diagram emphasize by illustrating only necessary parts of the body that actually involved in specific type of activities.

Overall diagram shows that bedroom is being use all the time so the furniture is playing an important role as we spend most of the time on it, so the movement of the chair and the space it occupies is mapped out, as every square meters is significant.

Surface is another essential parts so material, shape, position and texture should be considered in further detail, as the map have shown how frequently it’s being used and how necessary they are.

Relationships between Human - Object - Space

This diagram mainly emphasizes on the relationships between human, objects and space. On the first stage, the aim was to try overlapping the body movements on each activities as to study the traces of use on the objects in daily life as well as the limit of the body on each activities.

Then, the needed comfortable volume of space for each activities were illustrated as to show how much volume of space I really needed ( smaller scale than average people ).

Then, the quality of each object was studied as to show its frequency, necessity, and duration. The next stage was to try extracting these information together with the comfortable volume of space to form the possible different combinations of activities as the aim was to lift up the quality of the objects, so that more surface of objects will be used more with smaller volume of space as a result.

Mass of Movement & Relationship Rules

The aim is to find out how much space do we (I) really need to use at home. By observing the relationships with myself and the things that I use daily, it became apparent that some things require more space to interact with, some things require more time to be with, some things are more necessary, and some things take too much space more than they actually need .
This diagram projects what I do and how I do things at home; my gestures, the areas that I occupied, the time period I spent with each things, and my relationship rules with those objects.

Body Gestures and Object Necessities

The diagram describe the body movement that is use on that particular space-in relations to the use object, The diagram structure is arrange according to the necessity and time-of-use on different activities.

The 3 dimensional representation of the "space volume"- based on the analysis series of movement,
shows the overall contact surface of the space, where the red cube reperesent a functional space.
and the brightness shows the relation of necessity and time.

The diagram also shows a mult-fuctional object, where the space of the object has been modify to use as other funtions. and even some smaller object need to stay close as a group, due to its function of use with the electrical socket.

Gestures, Objects, and Interactions

ACTS maps are showing the gestures perform in the house, with furniture or object erased away. They are not fixed to any particular activity but to show a variety of body and its spatial application.

The ACTS maps are to read in parallel with the OBJS map to create relationship between the body and the object. The OBJS maps are showing surfaces at different level, size, and orientation.

The ambiguity presented in the two set of maps allow freedom for reader to interpret or to create relationship between each single map from the sets. It opens up the possibilities of activity, and  questioning the definition of spaces in the house that got divided into certain rooms. Examples of the relationship are shown in the SCENARIOS map, where they show pairings, combinations, shared qualities(which might be defined later by material), and requirements of infrastructure.
