Hong Kong - The City Without Car

Hong Kong spent so much space in the city for vehicles usages. Especially for car parks, which is a single function space yet extremely necessary for automobile base city. The research brings up the strategy that Hong Kong does not need cars. Instead, the space should be use to expand dwellings in this dents city.

The existing building within radiance of 400m. from MTR station will be remove to create pedestrian based city. This project is an experiment to visualize the possibility of Hong Kong City without cars.



As the dome has the radius of 400 m., hence the entire destinations within the dome is 
reachable from the MTR within 5-10 minutes walk.


A dome replaces the pre-existing automobile-based city. The proposed urban planning within the parameter of the dome, Wan chai will develop into the pedestrian-based city.

Experimental Designs

Circulation: The tube is connecting from the circumference direct to the MTR.

 The zoning: The red panel represents the interface between the two zonings; 
Green area and residential area.

 The recreational area is inserted between residential area (red) and office area (blue). 
The open area also allow for the further extension and multi-purpose usage.

Driving needs to take a longer route because of one-way streets.On the other hand, 
people can walk through the buildings with the escalated walkways.

In order to serve different dweller need and comfort within limited spaces of 4 sq.m., the adjustable area was designed, horizontal layering separated the wet and dry area for multifunctioning purposes as well as modular adjusted boxes that served both structure and container can be adjusted in length and angle to create their own functioning space base on their preferences.

For vertical panel that contains multi functioning box set for different activities and purposes for specific type of user, by just rotating only in vertical panel to serve all kind of activities within the limited space. Using same floor surface just shift of activities in vertical panel, to reduce the expansion in horizontal based.

Body Gesture and Duration of Interaction


The diagram shows human body gesture and duration of interaction between human body and the things. I choose to exclude architectural structure and other things that I do not interact; in order to see the volume of space that necessary things is using. And how the orientations of things affect the position where I choose to stay in that space.

The things that have direct interaction with my body are extrude our in another axis. Human figure is showing the body movement and how it interacts with the things. The darkness is representing the duration in that post; the darker colour means the longer I stay in that post.

From the diagram, the things that I interact for a long period of time are not only because its providing body comfort and mental entertainment, but also it is in a controlled environment; in terms of brightness and temperature.  Even thought something does not have interaction with human body, but it is still necessary thing that create a comfortable condition for people to dwell.
