1 to 1 of 1 by 1

To fully understand the situation that others are in, one might have to step in their shoes.
In this case, to fully understand the 4 sq.m life from J.G. Ballard's short story called 'Billennium', one might have to imagine, and construct.

The design was carried out as a paired work with the body of one being uses as the main user, which in this cases Jarim. The design derives from the study that were made earlier but mainly based on Jarim's analysis.

The design, is shown on the 3 plates below.

The name 1 to 1 of 1 by 1 came across from the design that focuses on the concept of modular where the given 4 sq.m were divided into 4 parts each contained 1 sq.m. The design then aimed for each part to be able to connect together in many ways possible creating its own home according to the surrounding context.

Each one will have its own function according to the uses of it. While the design is not operates, it will remain empty like nothing is there, but when the user want to activates it, all furniture and objects that are needed can be pull out from above, below or on the side wall. Hinges are the key to all this movements.

In order to serve different dweller need and comfort within limited spaces of 4 sq.m., the adjustable area was designed, horizontal layering separated the wet and dry area for multifunctioning purposes as well as modular adjusted boxes that served both structure and container can be adjusted in length and angle to create their own functioning space base on their preferences.

For vertical panel that contains multi functioning box set for different activities and purposes for specific type of user, by just rotating only in vertical panel to serve all kind of activities within the limited space. Using same floor surface just shift of activities in vertical panel, to reduce the expansion in horizontal based.

House on Cables

With the limited amount of the given area, we decided to use the advantage of not having height limit to design our house.

With the furniture being stored above our head, more space is available when those furniture is not in use.

The user is able to move comfortably in the house while doing things in the house. They can also mix and match those furniture according to their needs such as using the kitchen at the same time with dinning table or moving the bed up when using the kitchen. Because everything is stored above, there is enough space to do other activities such as exercise or inviting friends over.

The 4sq.m House

Phase 2 of the DenCity project is a design experiment of small dwelling.
This 4 sq.m. dwelling has been designed under the idea of body movement curvature.
Exploded axonometric of the house meant to show the activities underneath which
determine the curve and height of the overall outcome. Dealing with the limited
living space the minimum volume that considered sufficient for certain activity
was adopted and used in the design as well.

Images above portray the series of events in daily routine which corporate with the
transformation of the house itself to serve each activity. Moreover, openings in each
spot have been determined by surrounding context as well as activities underneath in order to provide inhabitant the highest comfort as possible.

Living in 4 sq.m.

The concept of one continuous surface which  allow the user to perform different household activities, including, toilet, washing, cooking, area of sitting, sleeping, eating and working.

under the surface are serve as different type of storage, from cooking utensil, hanging cloths and other un-use items.

Based from the analysis of human gesture, generate into the functional space where the negative area perform an circulation (base on the human gesture) of the room as well as the primary furniture where user can perform an ordinary household activities.

maximize the capacity of the storage space by using the positive area
(area where doesn't involve human circulation), to storage all the necessary items.
