CITIES WITHOUT GROUND

Hong Kong has been called " Cities Without Ground ", with its elevated walkway connecting different typologies of buildings among different districts together. It is the main pedestrian network of Hong Kong people.

Looking at the relationships between private and public pedestrian network at Mongkok neighbourhood.

Overlapping the three levels of pedestrian network together to see the intersected connections between both private and public networks; still less intersections are found.
So, " what if there are more intersections and connections between the 3 levels? "

Looking at the elevated walkway and MTR station in a smaller scale. Transient programs are found with various different activities and add-on materials between the two different districts; Mongkok and Central. The main users are maids coming from area they are working or living in. As a result, this shows that there is already a mix-use of pedestrian infrastructure going on, so it is not a problem to create more mix-use and public space along the public pedestrian network.

The chosen neighbourhood shows the area with potential of building the new public pedestrian infrastructure. The neighbourhood includes various types of building typologies, 3 levels of pedestrian network, together with a lot of MTR exits. Eight selected buildings are selected as the nodes of connection, each is different in terms of typologies and levels of monthly household income as for the possibility of connecting different levels of people together as a result.
